NEVLEC turns 20

On Tuesday September 1, 2020 NEVLEC achieves a major milestone in NEVLEC’s development – NEVLEC turns 20. September 1 2000, is when NEVLEC was formed from being the Electricity Department of the NIA. We have grown and matured over the years, but as with everything else we know there is still a lot of room for growth.

Whilst our circumstances and indeed that of everyone the world over, with the COVID-19 pandemic still looming over us, do not allow us to mark this momentous occasion in as a grand a manner as we would like to, our Management Team felt it was too big an occasion to allow it to pass or even to postpone celebrating it. We have thus decided to recognize the occasion with a week of activities starting today, Wednesday September 26, albeit we have decided to celebrate in a more moderate way, because of financial and COVID-19 regulation constraints.

Our celebrations will be under the theme ‘NEVLEC at 20- Powering Nevis into a sustainable and resilient future’.

The theme chosen highlights NEVLEC’s goal to adapt to the changes taking placing in the electricity industry to ensure that our electricity supply continues to facilitate economic development now and in the future. There is no doubt that a high-quality supply is a key ingredient to economic development.

Our staff and customers have made us who we are today. They will be the focus of our celebrations over coming days as you will note from the programme below.

Whilst a good quality supply of electricity is necessary for economic development, education is even more fundamental, because a good quality electricity supply is dependent on ensuring that the personnel involved have the necessary education. It is for this reason and our focus on sustainability and resiliency that we decided to start off our week of activities recognizing the importance of education. It is through education that we will eventually have individuals who can carry on the work that has taken place over the last 20 years and more. As a matter of fact, this year we announced that every three years NEVLEC will award a scholarship to one Nevisian to pursue engineering studies at the University of the West Indies. The Scholarship is titled the Cedric Ambrister Scholarship, named after an individual who contributed significantly to electricity development in Nevis.

Recognizing that COVID-19 has had an impact on our students’ learning, and may impact the mode of learning now and in the future to more electronic based systems, virtual learning, NEVLEC as part of its celebrations donated a laptop to each one of our secondary schools to assist in educating our students. It is just a small gesture to help build a sustainable and resilient future – like a massive tree starting off with a seed.
