NEVLEC Engages Charlestown Secondary School Students on Energy Conservation and Efficiency

As part of its Geography and Social Studies Week, the Social Studies Department of the Charlestown Secondary School invited the Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC) to facilitate an educational and interactive session on energy conservation and efficiency for Form 2 students on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

NEVLEC was represented by its General Manager, Mr. Nelson Ald Stapleton, a proud alumnus of Charlestown Secondary School, who welcomed the opportunity to return to his alma mater and share his knowledge and experiences with the next generation.

During the engaging session, Mr. Stapleton provided students with valuable insights into how electricity is generated and distributed across Nevis, the factors influencing electricity costs, and the importance of using energy responsibly.

He emphasized the distinction between energy conservation and energy efficiency, highlighting practical measures students can adopt at home and at school to reduce electricity consumption, lower household expenses, and minimize energy wastage.

The presentation also explored the connection between fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change. Mr. Stapleton introduced students to the Paris Agreement and its significance in advancing global efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy.

He further highlighted Nevis’s renewable energy ambitions, particularly the ongoing efforts to develop geothermal and solar energy as part of the island’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

Through interactive discussions and questions, students were encouraged to recognize that they, too, have an important role to play in energy conservation and environmental protection.

Reflecting on his return to Charlestown Secondary School, Mr. Stapleton also encouraged students to take their education seriously, pursue their ambitions, and explore the many career opportunities within the energy sector.

NEVLEC extends its appreciation to the Social Studies Department of Charlestown Secondary School for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful educational initiative.

By empowering our young people with knowledge and encouraging responsible energy practices, NEVLEC continues to support the development of a more energy-conscious generation and a cleaner, brighter, and more sustainable future for Nevis.
